Chapter Seventeen
I woke to someone pounding on my door. When I opened it, I found Bryce. âMan, you really are a hard sleeper. Itâs time to go to the Command Center. We are nearing the first moon.â
âIâll be there in a few minutes. Thanks for waking me up.â
I quickly got ready and headed to my post in front of the systems consoles. Everything checked out fine. No problems at my station. I glanced over at Connorâs tactical display. It showed a few green icons. I asked, âHow does the tactical display decide if the Zator are friendly or hostile? Or is that something you input?â
âI changed them to green, at least for now,â Connor replied.
I looked up at the viewscreen at the front of the room. We were getting closer to the moon. The visible part was covered in a huge storm. What was beneath was a mystery. That large of a storm though could be hard to deal with in a new colony. âIs that a tropical cyclone?â I asked, as I saw flashes of lightning light up the clouds.
âIt looks to be something similar. We will head to the other side of the moon, away from the storm,â Fritz said. âMaybe we can get a better glimpse of the surface.â
We all watched the viewscreen, as we navigated around the moon. We were relieved to see mostly clear skies on the other side. âLetâs run our scans, so we can see if this place would support Human life,â Fritz said.
We waited patiently for the scans to finish. From what we could see on the viewscreen, this moon had landmasses and water. One of the big questions would be that storm. We might have to watch this moon for a little longer than planned to see how fast that storm moves and how long it lasts. It was massive. That storm could be the reason this moon would not work to support a colony.
When the scans finally came in, we confirmed that the moon could support Humans. âSo does this mean we are going down there?â I asked. Part of me was excited to explore another new place. The other part was a little apprehensive. I glanced over at Bryce. From his expression, he did not want to venture to the ground.
âWe will do a few more detailed scans. Hopefully see what type of life-forms call this moon home. We need to make sure no hostile aliens live here,â Fritz said.
So we watched and waited. The scans took a long time, since they were so thorough. âCan we tell how fast that storm is moving?â I asked.
âOnce we finish this scan of the moon, we will figure that out. We also must ascertain which direction itâs traveling, before we can land on the surface,â said Fritz.
âCaptain, the scans show many different life-forms on the planet. None that seem like a civilization. No villages or cities are showing up. No roads or infrastructure that would point to intelligent life-forms,â said Connor.
âThatâs a step in the right direction.
